Project Vision: Bringing Art and Nature to Public Spaces

Our objective with Art Outside and In is to emphasize nature and art within public spaces, bypassing reliance on traditional museum hours or venue closures. The spaces encourage personal reflection, meditation, and a “call for silence” within each of us, inviting all to connect more deeply with art, nature, and each other.

The project aims to create flexible, mobile structures that serve as gathering places for meditation, tea ceremonies, martial arts sessions, dance, relaxation, or even quiet communion with nature. Designed to fit harmoniously in forests, beaches, town centers, monasteries, or mountain landscapes, these sacred spaces will offer the following:

• Civic and Community Utility: These spaces can also serve cities by providing outdoor venues for local cafés or events, reviving public areas with simple, elegant structures that engage communities and enhance cultural exchange.
• Crisis Resilience and Refuge: In times of natural or human-made crises, the spaces could serve as shelters—beautiful, meditative structures offering respite for displaced individuals or relaxation zones in refugee camps, possibly in partnership with the United Nations. Their light, mobile, and easily assembled design can also be adapted for temporary housing or emergency use.

Art, Imagination, and Collaboration

Depending on the partnerships and funding secured, the structures can be crafted from sustainable materials such as bamboo or lightweight metals. While the physical forms are simple and portable—some designed to fit in a backpack, others secured for longer-term public installations—the real magic lies within the space they create: a place for imagination, reflection, and shared experience.

In support of this vision, funding is sought for Nathalie Ishizuka to work with Japanese artisans in Japan or Brussels. Collaborations would focus on traditional crafts such as tatami-making and Japanese scroll framing, allowing Nathalie to bring authentic craftsmanship into each installation. This partnership would enhance the cultural depth of the project and foster a unique fusion of Japanese artistry and contemporary, meditative spaces.

Nathalie Ishizuka, the artist behind this project, envisions these cubes and spaces as a canvas to explore the four elements in her art with the public. Each installation provides an immersive experience, where Nathalie’s artwork, nature, and shared silence combine to inspire deeper connections. Collaborations with other artists is envisioned as with the photographer and sound engineer Stef Van Anlsenoy.

We are working like Pierre Sernet with a cube (one of the essential shapes of the universe), and the creation of sacred spaces within to sit in silence. To experience nature. To experience meditation. Our cube will be a variation that allows other artistic expression and in synch with meditative experiences within and without the cube.

Vision du Projet : Apporter l’Art et la Nature dans les Espaces Publics

Notre objectif avec Art Outside and In est de mettre en valeur la nature et l’art au sein des espaces publics, en dépassant les contraintes des horaires des musées traditionnels ou des fermetures de lieux culturels. Ces espaces encouragent la réflexion personnelle, la méditation et un « appel au silence » en chacun de nous, invitant chacun à se connecter plus profondément à l’art, à la nature et aux autres.

Un Projet de Structures Flexibles et Mobiles

Le projet vise à concevoir des structures légères et mobiles servant de lieux de rencontre pour la méditation, la cérémonie du thé, les arts martiaux, la danse, la relaxation, ou encore la communion silencieuse avec la nature. Conçus pour s’intégrer harmonieusement dans les forêts, sur les plages, dans les centres-villes, les monastères ou les paysages montagneux, ces espaces sacrés offriront les fonctions suivantes :

Utilité Civique et Communautaire

Ces espaces peuvent également servir les villes en offrant des lieux extérieurs pour les cafés locaux ou les événements, revitalisant ainsi les espaces publics grâce à des structures élégantes et épurées qui favorisent l’échange culturel et l’engagement communautaire.

Résilience et Refuge en Période de Crise

En temps de crise, qu’elle soit naturelle ou causée par l’homme, ces espaces pourraient également servir de refuges : des structures méditatives et esthétiques apportant du répit aux personnes déplacées ou des zones de détente dans des camps de réfugiés, en partenariat potentiel avec les Nations Unies. Leur conception légère, mobile et facilement assemblable permettrait aussi leur adaptation en logements temporaires ou en structures d’urgence.

Art, Imagination et Collaboration

Selon les partenariats et les financements obtenus, ces structures seront réalisées avec des matériaux durables comme le bambou ou des métaux légers. Si leurs formes physiques restent simples et transportables—certaines pouvant tenir dans un sac à dos, d’autres étant conçues pour des installations publiques de plus longue durée—la véritable magie réside dans l’espace qu’elles créent : un lieu d’imagination, de réflexion et d’expérience partagée.

Dans le cadre de cette vision, des financements sont recherchés pour permettre à Nathalie Ishizuka de collaborer avec des artisans japonais au Japon ou à Bruxelles. Ces collaborations se concentreraient sur des techniques artisanales traditionnelles telles que la fabrication de tatamis et le montage de rouleaux japonais (kakejiku), afin d’intégrer un savoir-faire authentique à chaque installation. Ce partenariat renforcerait la profondeur culturelle du projet et favoriserait une fusion unique entre l’artisanat japonais et des espaces contemporains de méditation.

Nathalie Ishizuka, artiste à l’origine de ce projet, conçoit ces cubes et espaces comme une toile sur laquelle elle explore les quatre éléments en interaction avec le public. Chaque installation offre une expérience immersive, où son art, la nature et le silence partagé s’entrelacent pour inspirer des connexions profondes. Des collaborations avec d’autres artistes sont envisagées, notamment avec le photographe et ingénieur du son Stef Van Alsenoy.

Projectvisie: Kunst en Natuur naar de Publieke Ruimte Brengen

Ons doel met Art Outside and In is om natuur en kunst te benadrukken in openbare ruimten, los van de beperkingen van traditionele museumuren of gesloten locaties. De ruimten moedigen persoonlijke reflectie, meditatie en een “oproep tot stilte” aan in ieder van ons, en nodigen iedereen uit om dieper contact te maken met kunst, natuur en elkaar.

Laten we ruimten creëren die ons verbinden met elkaar, onze omgeving en de stilte in onszelf.

Het project beoogt flexibele, mobiele structuren te creëren die dienst kunnen doen als ontmoetingsplaatsen voor meditatie, theeceremonies, krijgskunstsessies, dans, ontspanning of stille verbondenheid met de natuur. Ontworpen om harmonieus in bossen, op stranden, in stadscentra, kloosters of berglandschappen te passen, zullen deze sacrale ruimten het volgende bieden:

• Burgers en Gemeenschappen Dienen: Deze ruimten kunnen ook steden ondersteunen door buitenlocaties te bieden aan lokale cafés of evenementen. Ze herwaarderen publieke ruimten met eenvoudige, elegante structuren die gemeenschappen betrekken en culturele uitwisseling bevorderen.
• Veerkracht en Toevlucht bij Crisis: In tijden van natuurlijke of door mensen veroorzaakte crisissen kunnen deze ruimten dienen als schuilplaatsen—mooie, meditatieve structuren die rust bieden aan ontheemde mensen of ontspanningszones in vluchtelingenkampen, eventueel in samenwerking met de Verenigde Naties. Hun lichte, mobiele en eenvoudig op te zetten ontwerp maakt ze ook geschikt voor tijdelijk onderdak of noodsituaties.

Kunst, Verbeelding en Samenwerking

Afhankelijk van de samenwerkingen en beschikbare financiering kunnen de structuren vervaardigd worden uit duurzame materialen zoals bamboe of lichte metalen. Terwijl de fysieke vormen eenvoudig en draagbaar zijn—sommige passen in een rugzak, andere zijn bedoeld voor langdurige installatie in de publieke ruimte—ligt de echte magie in de ruimte die ze creëren: een plaats voor verbeelding, reflectie en gedeelde ervaring.

Ter ondersteuning van deze visie wordt financiering gezocht voor Nathalie Ishizuka om samen te werken met Japanse ambachtslieden in Japan of Brussel. Samenwerkingen zouden zich richten op traditionele ambachten zoals het maken van tatami en het inlijsten van Japanse rollen, waardoor Nathalie authentiek vakmanschap kan integreren in elke installatie. Deze samenwerking zou de culturele diepgang van het project versterken en een unieke fusie van Japanse kunst en hedendaagse, meditatieve ruimten mogelijk maken.

KIZUNA : THE ENDURING BONDS

Exhibition Kizuna : Embassy of Japan in Belgium March 5th – March 22nd 2024, Rue Van Maerlant 1, 1040 Brussels (10:00-12:00 and 13:30-16:00), Week Days Only, Embassy Hours.

The Japanese embassy of Brussels is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, Kizuna: the Bonds that Unite us All, featuring the artist Nathalie Ishizuka and her most recent work on the Four Elements (earth, water, air and fire) and the Crane Wife Re-Told. Over thirty paintings exhibited.

The exhibition Kizuna is born from Ishizuka working full time for over ten years with the Philosopher Dr. Paul Briot and artists after the March 11, 2011 crisis (nuclear, earthquake, tsunami) on the use of art to elevate in crisis.

Ishizuka was sent to Japan after March 11 disaster by Dr. Briot to find, select, and work with great Japanese traditional artists and masters from several disciplines who could through their art create a moment of silence within the viewer. “I thought I was coming to contribute something to the artists,” says Ishizuka, “but it was them who were training me.

While Ishizuka comes herself from a family of artists including her grandfather who painted the designs of ships and kimonos, she had no formal training in art. She was a meditator with no experience in the arts.

Ishizuka had to find and become the disciple of each Japanese master, before hoping to meditate with one or create with another. She did not learn techniques of sumie, ninon buyo (dance), shodo, japanese architecture or other (which would have taken several lifetimes says Ishizuka), but the way of being of each artist.

Nathalie’s meditations and deep friendships with Japanese masters for over ten years such as Saiso Shimada after March 11, 2011 lead to herself become an artist.

“I became an artist, by a fortunate accident,” says Ishizuka. “I loved painting and creation as a child, but never imagined to have the freedom to paint and create from one’s inner imagination. Nor the grace of such artists who carried art from within.”

The Four Elements

“The cranes that tell the tale of the Crane Wife in the exhibition are surrounded by paintings of the four elements. At the time of the tsunami, earthquake and nuclear incident, I had believed that man alone with God or the universe could overcome together. That we could re-invent ourselves,” says Ishizuka. “At the time, I was not yet aware in my meditations of the elements of earth, water, air and fire,” says Ishizuka. “These four elements are within each of us and embody the whole universe. Alone without them, we are nothing.”

The four elements are painted on large canvasses in acrylic often using Gold to show their importance. “These elements surround us and they engulf us,” says Ishizuka. “They are us,” she admits, “but far more than us, she adds simply. Humans are so small in this universe.

Without recognition of these forces within and without, it is hard to believe that we can overcome anything especially with current challenges in the world,” says Ishizuka.
