Art Inside and Out – The Sacred Bamboo Cube

Our objective with Art Inside and Out is to emphasize the integration of nature and art within public spaces, thereby bypassing the reliance on traditional museum hours or venue closures. The spaces encourage personal reflection, meditation, and a “call for silence” within each of us, inviting all to connect more deeply with art, nature, and each other.

Let us create spaces that connect us, our environment, and the silence within

The project aims to create flexible, mobile structures that serve as a place to paint, to create, to gather for meditation, tea ceremonies, martial arts, slow movement, relaxation, or even quiet communion with nature. Designed to fit harmoniously in a museum or in forests, beaches, town centers, monasteries, or mountain landscapes, these sacred spaces will offer the following:

Civic and Community Utility: These spaces can also serve cities by providing outdoor venues for local cafés or events, reviving public areas with simple, elegant structures that engage communities and enhance cultural exchange.

Crisis Resilience and Refuge: In times of natural or human-made crises, the spaces could serve as shelters—beautiful, meditative structures offering respite for displaced individuals or relaxation zones in our own homes, our own garden or even refugee camps, possibly in partnership with the United Nations. Their light, mobile, and easily assembled design can also be adapted for temporary housing or emergency use.

The Core of the Cube Project

In a time of crisis and disconnection, the Sacred Bamboo Cube, conceived by Nathalie Ishizuka and expanded by her visionary team, offers a minimalist space for stillness, clarity, and inner transformation. Rooted in the Earth element and connected to the Water Element, the cube invites individuals to reconnect with themselves in order to shift the world around them.

Ishizuka believes that meaningful change — including climate and societal evolution — begins with clarity in our inner worlds.

Through one-on-one retreats combining meditation, painting, and deep reflection of our personal and professional lives with physical activity, she guides individuals to align with their earth element and inner ocean, allowing them to become catalysts for healing the outer one.

Element Water, Acrylic, 120cm x 120cm, Artist Nathalie Ishizuka

In this larger context, the 240cm x 240cm cube, conceived by Nathalie, is built. With a top team—bamboo master Marc Symons (Bamboe België), sound and light designer Stef Van Ansloy, and young Japanese architectural student Erika Kumada—Nathalie brings the concept to life.

The cube is light, portable, child-constructible, and grounded in the vibration of Earth. This minimalist cube invites stillness, presence, and responsibility. Within its sacred space, art and silence awaken transformation — from the inside out.

The cube represents the Earth element—our inner stability, the Mt. Fuji that resides within each of us—grounding us when the outer world becomes chaotic. Nathalie’s exhibitions will allow viewers to step into the cube to experience art and reconnect with their inner world.

She invites us to transform the tumultuous inner ocean—our emotions and consciousness—that shapes the health of the outer ocean. The cube helps us do so on solid ground.

Why the Cube?

In a chaotic world, spaces of stillness are essential. The bamboo cube is not just shelter, but a symbol—a portable architecture of presence. As coastal cities face mounting environmental pressures, the cube becomes a space to slow down, connect, and reimagine possibilities, both internal and external.
Whether situated in Biarritz, Nice, Monaco or elsewhere, the cube acts as a still eye in the storm.

A Structure with Intention

The 240cm x 240cm footprint defines a zone of influence—a sacred radius we can cleanse, inhabit, and uplift. Built with attention and care, the cube’s mindful assembly— quick but meditative—embodies the values of its Japanese young architect, Erika.

The 240cm x 240cm represents not a personal boundary, but a zone of influence —

Its form reflects Ishizuka’s core truth: “what we build from within, we become.” In this sense the contributors bring their unique talents:

Bamboo & Joy: Marc Symons

With decades of experience, Marc Symons of Bamboe België brings joy and clarity to ecological bamboo design. His approach offers resilience, lightness, and simplicity—and this is essential to sharing this concept more widely.

Japanese Influence: Erika Kumada

Architectural student Erika Kumada brings a poetic and ceremonial sensibility, ensuring that the process of building the cube is as meaningful as the result.

Light & Sound: Stef Van Ansley

Photographer and sound engineer Stef Van Ansloy enhances the cube with immersive lighting and projection incorporating a multi-sensorial experience.

While a collaborative effort, the vision, design, and final execution of the Sacred Bamboo Cube is a vision of Nathalie Ishizuka, who retains rights to evolve and exhibit it freely while honoring all contributors and working with them in the future in mutually beneficial ways. “Together we are stronger and can create a profound impact,” says Ishizuka.

From Cities to Crisis

This cube is more than an artwork—it’s a response from within. It can be:

A space of dignity and stillness in refugee camps, with guidance for respectful use

From Brussels to Biarritz, from Ville-Franche to Nice or Monaco, from Coastal city ports to UN camps —

The Cube travels.

The Cube breathes.

The Cube transforms.

A Call to Support

Host the Cube.
Sponsor the exhibition “Mt. Fuji Meets the Ocean.”
Help seed stillness in places that need it most.
Mayors and City Teams Partner with us and visionary coastal NGOs.

Together, we can offer structures that inspire resilience, beauty, and a new way of being—inside and out.

A mobile installation in public squares such as a museum

A meditative hub for art, silence, and community at home or in one’s garden

A refuge in natural or human-made crises

We invite mayors, cities, museums, climate actors, NGOs and cultural organizations to reach out to us and sponsor flexible structures that can grow with cities and be present both in good times and challenging ones.

Element Water, acryl, 120 × 120 cm – kunstenaar Nathalie Ishizuka

Bijdragers:

Bamboe & Vreugde: Marc Symons

Japanse Invloed: Erika Kumada

Licht & Geluid: Stef Van Ansloy

Élément Eau, acrylique, 120 × 120 cm – artiste Nathalie Ishizuka

Bambou & Joie : Marc Symons

Influence Japonaise : Erika Kumada

Nestled by the ocean, La Maison Yokata is a vision for a sanctuary where art, mindfulness, and nature come together to inspire transformation.

Imagine a space infused with the rhythm of the sea—where meditative paintings, much like the timeless expanse of water, invite visitors to pause, reflect, and reconnect. Unlike traditional art institutions that house only classical works, this retreat will embrace the fluidity of contemporary, introspective art—an intimate place where creativity flourishes alongside the tides.

Much like the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, which seamlessly integrates music with breathtaking ocean views, La Maison Yokata will offer an immersive experience—but with visual art at its core.

Similar to the Rockport Ocean View Experience in the United States, La Maison Yokata Seeks to Transform through Art and the Ocean our Inner Space.
Building on Biarritz’s long tradition of the Ocean’s healing power and Monaco’s rich legacy in ocean conservation and artistic patronage, this project seeks visionary partners and artisans who believe in the transformative power of art and the Ocean.

I aim to collaborate with those who share a deep love for the Ocean, helping us reinvent ourselves from within and express ourselves in a way that honors, respects, and harmonizes with natural elements.

I invite partners, artisans and supporters to help bring this unique concept to life. We can begin with an exhibition and work together with Biarritz or Nice or another place near the Ocean and sponsors to create a larger vision together. The project can begin small, the size of an apartment overlooking the Ocean dedicated to the experience of meditation and art.

For our inspiration, we thank the Shalin Liu Performance Center and visionaries who support this center for what they have done to inspire us all and continue to do with the ocean and with the arts. Gratitude.

Imagine a space with meditative galleries and an ocean view that incite meditation or moments of beauty and silence. Spaces where we can work one one-on-one with Individuals, changing our concept of time, space, creativity and possibilities.

We are also deeply grateful to visionary architects today whose works embody the harmony of the four elements: earth, water, air, and fire. Among them, we hold in great esteem Kenzo Tange, whose design of The Asian Art Museum in Nice, by the ocean, stands as a testament to architectural brilliance.

As Tange himself shared about the Asian Art Museum in Nice: ‘The museum’s plan is based on two fundamental geometric forms of Japanese tradition; the square, symbol of the earth, and the circle, symbol of the sky…’

The design of this museum, both inside and out, creates the illusion of floating on water, while its roof and inner staircase bring an energetic flow that cultivates a transformative and meditative experience.

To me, the Asian Art Museum, the Shalin Liu Performance Center and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco represent the perfect union of architecture and the elements, creating an art space that not only houses art but also offer a profound and transformative inner experience.

I hope that one day, I will have the honor of meeting the curators and directors of these museums—to brainstorm with them, support their work, and perhaps even exhibit my own creations in these living spaces where art and the four elements converge, fostering transformation and a love and respect for the Ocean.

In the years to come, I aspire to collaborate closely with those who love the Ocean and Biarritz to establish a new art space—one that draws from the region’s rich heritage while reinforcing its historical strengths: transformation and the renewal of health and well-being through the Ocean.

As human beings, especially in turbulent times, we seek a place to stand—a space where time stops, where we are deeply connected to the environment, where we feel fully present, as small as an atom and as vast as the universe itself.

The Māori of New Zealand call this place Tūranga waewae, often translated as “A Place to Stand.”

Kupe, the explorer, when he saw the Northern part of what is now called New Zealand called it Ao Te Ar Oa, the country of the long white Cloud.

For me, this place exists on a rock in Biarritz, at the Grand Plage. It is a place of connection, a refuge where I have returned since childhood to ground myself, to reconnect with the earth and the ocean. It is both a place to stand and a place to surrender—to lie on the sand, feeling the grains beneath me, honoring the earth, my mother, who lent me this body and to whom I will one day return it.

Now, at fifty-five, as I care for my aging mother, I reflect on how I will return this body to the earth. In meditation, I have come to understand that I alone am responsible for this physical body—one I have often neglected, treating it as a tool for my intellect, my creativity, and even my spiritual pursuits. I forgot to move, to rest, to honor my body’s needs. I forgot to return to the sand of Biarritz, to lie down and simply feel.

When I look at the ocean and think of climate change, my background in international affairs leads me to rational concerns—plastic pollution, recycling, ocean conservation. But in meditation, I see it differently: the ocean’s pollution is a reflection of our inner pollution, of the countless emotions and thoughts that cloud our consciousness. We have up to 60,000 thoughts a day—95% the same as the day before, 80% negative. Drowned in this inner noise, we lose our ability to truly be present.

If I want to contribute to healing the ocean, I must also cleanse the ocean within me. I must learn to navigate, not just the external waters, but my inner self. In Māori tradition, the pirogue (canoe) represents the mother, the navigator is the father, and the self is the child. At birth, we are entrusted with a pirogue—our body, which is both our vessel and the earth itself. The navigator—whether the divine, the universe, or life’s wisdom—guides us. But we must be silent to receive that guidance. Our consciousness is the child, learning to trust, to listen, to follow.

At birth we are entrusted with the Pirogue – Our Body whis is both our vessel and the earth itself.

In 2017, just as I prepared to teach meditation, a scooter accident shattered my right hip. The diagnosis: osteoporosis. A small accident, a broken hip—a clear message. I had not honored my body. I had exhausted it, ignored its needs, polluted it with unexamined emotions. My body had spoken the truth I refused to hear.

This is why I now seek to paint the meeting of Mt. Fuji and the Ocean. For me, Mt. Fuji represents the stability of the earth within us—the foundation we must stand upon before we can observe and embrace the ocean, the element of water, with all its turbulence and power. Before I replace my hip, I want to integrate its lesson. I want to understand why I broke it, to heal the root cause—my thoughts.

So I train. First in water, where movement is gentle. As if learning to trust again. Learning to stand, to move, to regain strength before placing full weight upon my body.

As I prepare for this exhibition, I have been filming the ocean in Biarritz—each month, for a week at a time, since August. Some of this footage, captured with the help of photographer Stef Van Alsenoy, will be part of the exhibit.

In meditation, I painted a piece unlike anything I have created before—a rose des vents (compass rose). I immediately felt it was an offering, a gesture of gratitude to the ocean. And when I showed it to my coach, Didier Charvet (Olympic sailing trainer), he saw its place: on the sails of a new generation of cargo ships designed to reduce carbon emissions. He saw that it could bring light.

I do not claim to know how to navigate the ocean. But I know that if I am to place a painting on sails at sea, I must work with someone who does. Someone who has dreamt since childhood of becoming one with the pirogue.

In Meditation we Must learn to Oriente Ourselves Within Our Body, with the Maori Orientation on the Ocean begins on Land

This is why I have chosen Didier Charvet as my coach and guide. To help heal my physical body, as he has healed his. To help me experience, as closely as possible, what it means to navigate with the wind. Since August, we have visited legendary kitesurfing locations, where he has taught me to hold a kite, to feel the wind, to stand on a paddleboard despite my injury, despite my struggle to find balance.

For the Māori say:

When you become a voyager of the ocean,
You must give yourself to the sea.
You must know the habits of the pirogue,
How it moves, how it rides,
How to remain steady in a storm.
You must know how to navigate,
How to position yourself in the ocean when the weather turns wild.
To stand strong,
You must be prepared—mentally, physically, and spiritually.

This is the call.

This is why I want to paint the meeting of Mt. Fuji—the ultimate symbol of stability, unshaken by storms—and the ocean of Biarritz, an endless surge of motion and power.

Didier spoke to me of the Māori. Without knowing, I had already drawn one of their boats. He spoke the name Aotearoa—New Zealand.

Artist Nathalie Ishizuka, Quick Sketch for Didier Charvet and a Logo for his Business Card. Without knowing, it resembles the Maori Pirogue Boats

The word AOTEAROA vibrated within me. It resonated with strength, with the power to stand.

I believe that through continued meditation on the elements of earth and water, and by translating those meditations into physical form—through painting, through action—I will complete a part of my journey. I will seek forgiveness from the ocean for all the unconscious ways I have polluted it, and I will seek to cleanse my consciousness from within.

At the same time, I want to contribute outwardly. I want to place this painting on cargo sails that harness wind power, to help transform maritime transport. I want to show that through art, through symbol, through a shared vision, we can begin to cleanse both our inner and outer oceans.

Sponsorship: To Feel Navigation from within and Without

I am seeking a residency sponsorship to travel with Didier Charvet to New Zealand, to spend time with the Māori, to experience firsthand how they navigate the ocean, both physically and spiritually. Through this experience, through meditation, and through our combined reflections as well as time with Maori and on the water, I will create new paintings—paintings that embody this journey, this search for balance, this act of standing in one’s place.

This project is directly connected to my exhibition “Mt. Fuji Meets the Ocean”, where I explore the dialogue between stability and movement, between grounding and fluidity. I believe this journey to New Zealand will deepen my understanding of these themes, allowing me to bring something profound and tangible to the exhibition.

Through this residency, I will gain not only personal insight but also the ability to contribute to a larger vision—one that connects art, meditation, and environmental consciousness.

I invite sponsors to support this journey—not just as a personal endeavor, but as an exploration of how we can stand, navigate, and create in harmony with the world around us.

Dear Mr. Marcolini,

“What if each chocolate evoked an ELEMENT present in everything that surrounds you, comforts you, including your own body?”

SEEKING NEW PARTNERS FOR ARTISTIC CREATION AND DISCOVERY OF THE FOUR ELEMENTS BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC

In March 2024, Nathalie Ishizuka envisioned a unique collaboration with Pierre Marcolini for an event at the Japanese Embassy. Her idea was to sponsor a collection of paintings representing the four elements, accompanied by an interactive musical experience that would engage the audience with the artwork. Ishizuka’s vision extended beyond just seeing, hearing, and moving with the paintings—she wanted the public to taste the elements in a meditative experience.

However, due to the Marcolini group’s extensive expansion in Asia, with a considerable number of new shops opening at the same time, Ishizuka was unable to connect or meet with Pierre Marcolini to propose his sponsorship for the event at the Japanese Embassy. Despite this, the experience sparked her imagination, leading her to explore new creative collaborations with Michelin-starred chefs and other culinary artists who have the ability to transform their craft with innovation.

The Four Elements at the Japanese Embassy in Brussels on March 7, 2024

Ishizuka’s approach is always driven by spontaneity and intuition. “I was immediately attracted to Marcolini, because I foremost enjoy his chocolates, but also because of his presence in Japan a country for which I feel a deep affinity and love. I want to re-invent things in Japan with great artists, with innovative creators and Marcolini is always open to innovation and expansion. And there is nothing more expansionary in the universe, then meditation,” says Ishizuka with a laugh.

Ishizuka’s style involves making direct, unplanned contact—whether by visiting the Marcolini shop in Sablon just before Christmas, reaching out to his new CEO from HEC (Ishizuka’s alma mater), or contacting the company’s headquarters. Ideally, she would just like to bump into him and see if there is a fit.

Ishizuka continues to savor Marcolini’s dark chocolates and wishes him success in Japan and beyond. Ishizuka hopes their paths will cross one day, perhaps in Japan or through a shared meditation.

Nathalie remains inspired and open to collaborating with Mr. Marcolini and his team, as well as with other chefs, chocolatiers, tea makers, and creators of sweet delicacies for the tea ceremony.

With a family background in Michelin-starred cuisine—her French side of the family includes an uncle chef who had the good fortune to have as a short stagiere Alain Ducasse when he was starting out—Ishizuka remains drawn to chefs who are also artists and to those who aspire to reduce sugar in sweets and innovate and expand into new realms.

She is also open to the idea of meditating with chefs and their teams during the process of selecting, preparing, and creating the finest ingredients. For her, everything matters, including the packaging, which she views as an essential part of preserving and sharing the energy and vibrancy of something living and beautiful.

CHEFS, CHOCOLATIERS IN FRANCE, BELGIUM OR TOKYO, TEA MAKERS, & THOSE WHO WORK WITH PEOPLE IN MEDITATION AND TEA CEREMONIES CONTACT THE ARTIST DIRECTLY FOR POSSIBLE NEW CREATIONS

KIZUNA : THE ENDURING BONDS

Exhibition Kizuna : Embassy of Japan in Belgium March 5th – March 22nd 2024, Rue Van Maerlant 1, 1040 Brussels (10:00-12:00 and 13:30-16:00), Week Days Only, Embassy Hours.

The Japanese embassy of Brussels is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, Kizuna: the Bonds that Unite us All, featuring the artist Nathalie Ishizuka and her most recent work on the Four Elements (earth, water, air and fire) and the Crane Wife Re-Told. Over thirty paintings exhibited.

The exhibition Kizuna is born from Ishizuka working full time for over ten years with the Philosopher Dr. Paul Briot and artists after the March 11, 2011 crisis (nuclear, earthquake, tsunami) on the use of art to elevate in crisis.

Ishizuka was sent to Japan after March 11 disaster by Dr. Briot to find, select, and work with great Japanese traditional artists and masters from several disciplines who could through their art create a moment of silence within the viewer. “I thought I was coming to contribute something to the artists,” says Ishizuka, “but it was them who were training me.

While Ishizuka comes herself from a family of artists including her grandfather who painted the designs of ships and kimonos, she had no formal training in art. She was a meditator with no experience in the arts.

Ishizuka had to find and become the disciple of each Japanese master, before hoping to meditate with one or create with another. She did not learn techniques of sumie, ninon buyo (dance), shodo, japanese architecture or other (which would have taken several lifetimes says Ishizuka), but the way of being of each artist.

Nathalie’s meditations and deep friendships with Japanese masters for over ten years such as Saiso Shimada after March 11, 2011 lead to herself become an artist.

“I became an artist, by a fortunate accident,” says Ishizuka. “I loved painting and creation as a child, but never imagined to have the freedom to paint and create from one’s inner imagination. Nor the grace of such artists who carried art from within.”

Series of Japanese Cranes Shodo and Acrylic Inspired by Hokusai

Within the exhibition are twelve paintings of cranes painted on Japanese shodo paper on Canvas with gold leaf and acrylic. Each painting is named after a virtue that Ishizuka believes carried the Japanese throughout the crisis and that can be experienced by each of us: Unity, Intuitive Action, Roll with Waves, Let Go, Open Heart, Stand Tall, Truth Within, Imagination, Extend, One Pointed Focus: Life, Living Blue Threads and Face the Sun.

These twelve paintings recount the story she wrote and illustrated after the tsunami and nuclear incident to share the message behind a letter co- authored with Dr. Briot. At that time Ishizuka states, “Dr. Briot entrusted me totranslate the letter to Japanese friends which asks artists to elevate us, but it was so deep, no one wanted to translate into Japanese. No one.”

“I left no stone untouched,” says Ishizuka. “I even asked Haruki Murakami, through his editor if he could help us. He liked the letter to Japanese friends but does not translate. Finally, when faced with resistance,” says, Ishizuka, “you have to be open to another path.”

“I decided to take a fable that the Japanese knew and loved, The Crane Wife (tsuru no ongaeshi) and change the fable to illustrate the main point of the letter, that each of us are threads, and that together with our inner imagination and manifestation we can create bonds that can change the earth.”

The crane in the story is the white bobbin in Dr. Paul Briot’s poem, “The White Spindle” . The poem reads,

A white bobin quivers. It links earth and sky.

A thread unites man with God.
We are that thread.

– Paul Briot, published in The Radiant..An Art towards the Infinite?” 2018 version, Publisher Caracteres

The drawings are inspired by Hokusai. Ishizuka drew them in his simple style of using one fine black line and a simple red dot. “There is something in his minimalist cranes,” says Ishizuka “that radiates great strength and beauty.”

“These twelve cranes that tell the tale of the Crane Wife in the exhibition are surrounded by paintings of the four elements. At the time of the tsunami, earthquake and nuclear incident, I had believed that man alone with God or the universe could overcome together. That we could re-invent ourselves,” says Ishizuka. “At the time, I was not yet aware in my meditations of the elements of earth, water, air and fire,” says Ishizuka. “These four elements are within each of us and embody the whole universe. Alone without them, we are nothing.”
