A Dialogue Between the Biarritz Ocean and Mt. Fuji : Ishizuka and Van Alsenoy Photos, Paintings & Filming from the Heart of Biarritz
The photographer Stef Van Alsenoy was asked by the Biarritz Artist Nathalie Ishizuka to consider filming the Ocean of Biarritz and capturing its essence, much as he has done with his famous work on Mt. Fuji.
Since June 2024, I have had the privilege of working alongside the exceptional photographer and sound artist, Stef Van Alsenoy, in a project that gently weaves the powerful presence of the Biarritz Ocean with the grounding stillness of Mt. Fuji.
From the panoramic windows of the Casino Bellevue, we have been filming the ocean each month—capturing not just its movement, but its spirit.
Our intention is to honor the Element of Water—its strength, its vastness, its timeless ability to cleanse and renew. This water element, so alive in the Atlantic waves of Biarritz, is being brought into poetic dialogue with the Element of Earth, symbolized by the sacred stillness of Mt. Fuji, a mountain that has deeply inspired my artistic practice through meditation and inner transformation.
Under Stef’s gentle and professional guidance, I have revisited some of Biarritz’s most meaningful sites from my childhood. With his expertise from Brussels, Stef helps guide me remotely in framing and capturing the ocean’s many moods—from light and shadow to rhythm and breath. Though I came to this project as a complete novice in photography, each month I feel the lens opening not just to the sea, but to a deeper sense of presence.
The process is simple, but intentional: I place a call to Stef just before filming, and we calibrate the camera together—adjusting for light, wind, and time of day. Then, alone with the view, I press record. Every thirty minutes of footage becomes a meditation—an offering of stillness, of motion, of something greater than us both.
Now, we dream of bringing this evolving dialogue—between Ocean and Mountain, Water and Earth—into a public space that holds meaning: the Casino Bellevue itself.
There, where the work was born and continues, we hope to share with the people of Biarritz and beyond the healing strength of these elements in union—through photography, sound, painting, and presence.
Meditation, Painting and the Images Within
This process of creating—of painting and filming—is rooted in a deeper interiority. Alongside the filming of the ocean, I have spent the last six months meditating daily with a monumental photograph of Mt. Fuji by Stef Van Ansloy that spans nearly the entire length of my living room. It has not been a passive gaze, but a quiet, sustained encounter—an intimate dialogue with the sacred mountain.
Mt. Fuji, the embodiment of the Earth element, stood before me each day with unwavering presence—immovable, silent, yet pulsing with life. In this stillness, I began to feel its strength beneath my feet, its calm rising through my breath. Only after months of such inward grounding could I lift a brush and begin to paint—not merely an image, but the deep resonance of the mountain itself.
Now, as this grounded Earth meets the ever-shifting Water of the Atlantic—through film, sound, and paint—a new conversation begins. It is a meeting of elements: the stillness of Fuji with the rhythm of the sea. In this union lies not just contrast, but healing—a quiet reminder of balance, presence, and the beauty of what endures.
My hope is that in a year or two, this evolving body of work may be shared within the very walls of the Casino Bellevue, where it first began. Until then, my meditations continue. Mt. Fuji—the mountain within me—remains my guide. And gently, I begin to turn my gaze toward Biarritz, toward the ocean that not only raised me, but purifies me.
I am confident that this mountain and the purifying force of the Ocean in Biarritz will carry others today during these unsettling times to greater paths of inner and outer beauty.

Un Dialogue entre l’Océan de Biarritz et la Mt. Fuji : Filmer depuis le Cœur de Biarritz
Depuis juin 2024, j’ai le privilège de collaborer avec le photographe et artiste sonore d’exception, Stef Van Alsenoy, dans un projet qui tisse avec délicatesse la puissance de l’Océan de Biarritz et la stabilité intérieure du Mont Fuji.
Depuis les grandes baies vitrées du Casino Bellevue, nous filmons chaque mois l’océan – capturant non seulement son mouvement, mais aussi son âme.
Notre intention est de rendre hommage à l’Élément Eau – sa force, son immensité, sa capacité intemporelle à purifier et régénérer. Cet élément vivant dans les vagues de l’Atlantique entre en dialogue poétique avec l’Élément Terre, incarné par le silence sacré du Mont Fuji, montagne qui inspire profondément ma pratique artistique à travers la méditation et la transformation intérieure.
Sous la guidance douce et professionnelle de Stef, j’ai revisité certains lieux emblématiques de Biarritz, profondément ancrés dans mes souvenirs d’enfance. Depuis Bruxelles, Stef me guide à distance pour cadrer et saisir les multiples humeurs de l’océan – la lumière, l’ombre, le rythme, le souffle. Bien que novice en photographie, je sens, mois après mois, l’objectif s’ouvrir non seulement sur la mer, mais aussi sur une présence plus vaste.
Le processus est simple, mais profondément intentionnel : juste avant l’enregistrement, j’appelle Stef pour ajuster ensemble la vitesse, la lumière et les conditions du jour. Puis, seule face à l’horizon, j’appuie sur « enregistrer ». Chaque séquence de trente minutes devient une méditation – une offrande de silence, de mouvement, de quelque chose qui nous dépasse.
Aujourd’hui, nous rêvons de partager ce dialogue en devenir – entre l’Océan et la Montagne, entre l’Eau et la Terre – dans un lieu chargé de sens : le Casino Bellevue lui-même.
Là où cette œuvre a vu le jour, nous espérons inviter les habitants de Biarritz et d’ailleurs à ressentir la force apaisante de cette union, à travers la photographie, le son, la peinture et la présence.
Méditation, Peinture et les Images Intérieures
Ce processus de création — entre peinture et film — s’enracine dans une intériorité profonde. Parallèlement aux prises de vue de l’océan, j’ai passé les six derniers mois à méditer quotidiennement face à une photographie monumentale du Mont Fuji, qui occupe presque tout l’espace de mon salon. Il ne s’agissait pas simplement de regarder, mais d’un échange silencieux, soutenu — un dialogue intime avec cette montagne sacrée.
Le Mont Fuji, incarnation de l’élément Terre, se tenait là chaque jour, avec une présence inébranlable — immobile, silencieuse, et pourtant vibrante de vie. Dans ce silence, j’ai commencé à ressentir sa force sous mes pieds, son calme s’élever en moi. Ce n’est qu’après ces mois d’ancrage intérieur que j’ai pu saisir un pinceau et commencer à peindre — non pas une simple image, mais la résonance profonde de la montagne elle-même.
Aujourd’hui, alors que cette Terre enracinée rencontre l’Eau mouvante de l’Atlantique — à travers le film, le son et la peinture — une nouvelle conversation prend forme. Une rencontre d’éléments : l’immobilité du Fuji et le rythme de la mer. Dans cette union réside plus qu’un contraste : un soin, une mémoire silencieuse de l’équilibre, de la présence, et de la beauté de ce qui perdure.
Je suis convaincue que cette montagne et la force purificatrice de l’océan à Biarritz porteront d’autres personnes, en ces temps troublés, vers de plus grands chemins de beauté intérieure et extérieure.
Aujourd’hui, nous recherchons un parrainage pour une telle exposition et serions ravis d’avoir l’opportunité de réfléchir ensemble.
Mon espoir est que, dans un an ou deux, ce travail en évolution puisse être partagé entre les murs mêmes du Casino Bellevue, là où il est né. D’ici là, mes méditations se poursuivent. Le Mont Fuji — cette montagne en moi — reste mon guide. Et doucement, je tourne mon regard vers Biarritz, vers l’océan qui non seulement m’a élevée, mais me purifie.
